Working in Manchester one morning, I happened upon a little known hole in the wall restaurant named the Cosmic Omelet. Strange sounding name and mixed reviews made me a little skeptical to try it at first, but I am glad I did.
The Cosmic Omelet is a quirky, fun place to enjoy a good breakfast/meal. Clearly whomever designed this place had a lot of fun. I only had breakfast there, but they have definitely intrigued me enough to go back and sample their lunch menu as well.
The Atmosphere:
Pictures of space and various heavenly bodies abound. Cafeteria style restaurant, with a very welcoming staff. Also I like the fact that their cooks name is "Mad Max", anyone named after a Mel Gibson character is all right in my book. To go to the bathroom, you literally follow the Yellow Brick road. I thought that was quite amusing and clever. This is not the place you want to go to when you want to watch a game on the TV, as there is only one television and the staff barely knows how to use the remote and/or someone may be watching another program. If you read a bit about their history, you will like these people even more. This is a small town place with lots of guts and perseverance. Locally owned and run these people put everything they have into making the Cosmic Omelet what it is, and I like it.
Prices/Affordability.
The prices are reasonable, at first I thought the entrees were on the small side, however, after eating my meal I was quite full. Most platters are less than $8.00, and as I said you will be full (unless you are a bit on the glutton side, in which case, the food is so affordable..order two platters.)
Having lived in Atlanta, GA for some time, I have an affinity for southern style food. When I saw that they had biscuits and gravy on the menu, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Why would you have biscuits and gravy at an omelet shop you ask? Because it was on the friggin menu thats why!!? Don't judge me.
The biscuits and gravy were absolutely awesome, the gravy was creamy white and nice and thick with chunks of sausage all over. The biscuits were perfectly cooked and buttery. It was like being down south all over again. I like my eggs sunny side up, and they were cooked perfectly to order and my hash browns were reminiscent of my favorite diner that my dad used to bring me to when I was a kid. This was one of their big breakfasts and it was great! My coffee was great, and the OJ I had was fresh (probably from a carton but good none the less)
Eating here was a treat, not only did every bite I have take me back to a couple of different happy places from my past, but it was fun watching the other patrons. They have many regulars that visit the C.O, but there were other newbies like me. The omelets that I saw being delivered to tables looked and smelled awesome, and not once did I see anyone complain. So I guess I really have to make at least two more trips back to the C.O one for an omelet and another for lunch, maybe I will bring a guest or two with me as well.
I would highly recommend the Cosmic Omelet to anyone in the Manchester area for breakfast or lunch. They have a pretty well rounded menu with fun names for their platters. I believe even the pickiest patron could find something they would enjoy here. Heck, they even have a Grilled Bagel with bacon and peanut butter for the more adventurous.
The Service:
The Staff seem very friendly, younger and energetic. They definitely encourage them to be perky and full of humor. I myself enjoy a bit of levity every now and then especially in the morning. Nothing worse than a cranky pants teenager taking your order. Some might say they are a little smart alecky, but hey this is New England, we invented being smart aleck's, and personally I like it. So there!
All in all, I would give the Cosmic Omelet a 7.5 out of 10 rating. Good food, good atmosphere, fun staff and entertaining menu. Stop by the next time you are in Manchester and enjoy a good meal!
